You're History FC
When I first came to University I was worried that I would no longer be able to play football because of the competition for places in all the teams and the high quality of all the players. It was then I received a golden opportunity to play football in a semi-competitive atmosphere with a great bunch of people. Then
captain Jamie Foulis entered lectures asking for players for the History society football team and it sounded perfect; football every week even though I was not the best player around. Putting on the famous Golden Wonders shirt (long has it been a tradition of You’re History FC to have Golden Wonders as the sponsor on
our shirts) isn’t about winning every game, it’s about a good team atmosphere and enjoying your time on the pitch, and certainly over my past two years playing for the History team, win or lose, every game has been good. In my first year we only had 7 or 8 players every week, which made every game tough but the
atmosphere in the changing room was always positive after every game, and going for a drink after the match just added to the great social atmosphere the team brings. Second year we had a much bigger team and thus we were much more successful achieving promotion in first semester. It wasn’t only playing
football that I have enjoyed with You’re History FC but also going o watch various football matches together in the pub, experiencing some of he greatest games of recent times, especially in the Champions League, with a great bunch of people. The team isn’t even just a place to talk about football, due to the fact
we are mainly History students spanning across different stages of University, there is great advice to be heard from the more senior members of the team relating to all the courses at Edinburgh University. Throughout second year with the victories and the losses the changing room never changed, and that’s why
everyone on the team comes back the next week, because even if you don’t play a full 90 minutes you still feel like you are on the pitch kicking the ball with the 11 players on it. It might just be an Inter-Mural league but every goal is celebrated with so much passion and in the unpredictable Scottish winters, even
in the worst weather, the games are a laugh. So entering my third year now as joint-captain with Lewis Hurt we are hoping to carry on this positive atmosphere that has existed ever since we started playing for the History team. We are planning even more social events with the team this year including more meals
and nights out. We want the team to be a place to make friends and get advice. Yes we want to win games, anyone who plays a game of football whether it be on the Meadows or at the World Cup final wants to win a game, but in You’re History FC losing isn’t the end of the world, and that’s what makes dawning the Golden
Wonders shirt special.
